Corvallis Rally Against HR 4437
Yesterday, an anti-4437 rally took place on the campus of Oregon State University and continued downtown Corvallis to the courthouse. As I approached the scheduled rally, I passed a group of students from Corvallis High School.

At first, I heard some cheering and quiet talk amongst the students. Near the front, some boys were waving a Mexican flag and yelling, "Beaners! Yeah!" It was all in fun, but would ultimately undercut any good that bystanders would get from the whole thing. I suggested to the one yelling the loudest that saying "beaner" is disrespectful to himself and maybe something else would be more appropriate. He took my suggestion without being sarcastic. Eventually, the crowd was chanting, "Si se puede!" (Yes we can!)
I diverted my course from the students to find the rally on campus, where small numbers were starting to gather. Once the school kids showed up, the numbers kept growing.

Members from the community, faculty and some OSU students began to show up in support of immigrant rights. The point of this rally and march was to say NO to the proposed HR 4437 bill from James Sensenbrenner(R). This bill would not only make it a felony to be in the United States illegally, it also criminalizes family, friends and others who may provide aid of any sort to an illegal immigrant. It has received mass protest across the country, in cities like Los Angeles, where over 500,000 people showed up. Yesterday in Corvallis, between 200 and 600 people showed up. There were several events in the span of time between 11 AM - 2:30 PM, each with varying numbers of people.
There was one counter-protestor. He held a sign that said "Illegal is illegal" which quickly drew disdain from ralliers.

Boys from the high school gathered around him and held up Mexican flags. "Why are you holding that flag when you're in America? Are you an American?" asked the counter-protestor. The boys exclaimed that they were proud of their heritage, followed by a cheer for "brown pride." He wasn't impressed.
A few more people surrounded him with signs that read, "No Human Being is Illegal" and "Not every Latino is Illegal... Today we march, tomorrow we vote."

A Native American woman walked up to him and reminded him of the illegal immigrants from 1492. She made some interesting points that left him without much to say. When asked by a reporter from the student paper why he was there, he stated, "People want to become Americans....right? But they want to bring their culture... here, and not assimilate into OUR culture." He also called the Mexican border an "open pipeline for terrorists." Shortly after the 8th, maybe 9th person had said their piece to him, he was "late for class."
The march began at around 12:30. The crowd went across campus, then about 20 blocks toward downtown.

Eventually, the crowd ended up at the Courthouse, where a few speakers thanked the crowd for showing up, and several people made impromptu speeches. About half were in English, the other half in Spanish. "We're all equal, nobody is illegal!" and "We want equality and justice for all people who live here!" were among the main messages of the various speakers. One student who made a speech indicated that his family was forced to come here because of U.S. foreign policy. "I didn't ask to be here. I came to this country... because of a war, my family had to come to this country and struggle to survive, thanks to the US Government...now they want to take that away from us." He also said, "We have a responsibility for those who can't speak!" The crowd responded with cheers and by chanting, "Aqui estamos, y no nos vamos!" ("Here we are, and we won't go!") Another speaker brought up names of civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez. "Remember what they said, what they stood for!" We were reminded that Cesar Chavez lead a march from Delano to Sacramento, 40 years ago.

Very little media folk showed up. KEZI 9 from Eugene attended the initial rally on campus, but disappeared before the march started. Corvallis Gazette Times was there. A few students from OSU's student paper, the "Barometer," were there. The guy in the next photo with the video camera was part of a coordinated effort with some other leaders of the rally.

After the rally at the Courthouse concluded, the crowd dispersed and a group of about 50 marched back to campus. The drums rang out, occasional chanting was heard and passers-by in their cars honked in support of the marchers.

At the end, before a few of the protestors went to talk about the experience on OSU's campus radio station, this was what remained.

The march and rallies turned out a fairly large crowd, though small in comparison to the tens to hundreds of thousands who have gathered across the US. The energy made the crowd seem larger than it was. The people were peaceful, there were people with materials to write to members of Congress... there were even people there to help others get registered to vote.
As we look back on our history as a nation that built itself on slave labor and peasant wages for its immigrant working class, some look forward to a brighter future of liberty and justice for all. While that is laid out in the pledge of allegiance, no group has ever, or will ever, achieve that by sitting on their butts.

I wonder how many of these kids drive Hondas ?
Just wonder'n ?
Cause the labour force they are defending is gone !
In this area, farmwork is more a job market than auto manufacturing.
Wow, you did a great job documenting this event.
Couple things.
1. Your Bush magnet is in! I'll mail this weekend.
2. Great pics. I LOVE Oregon and have never been there...friends live in Portland, and say they love the Pac-northwest. I've always wanted to visit further up to Seattle as well.
3. There's a guy commenting on my site with a hilarious web site. He goes around to different liberal sites and acts like an ass. Perhaps you've seen him make the round. His name is hellpig , check him out. If you ever need to see who is on the opposite side of the issues we care about, look that brotha up and you'll see why we fight for what we do.
4. Did you happen to get the phone number of the chick with heart on her shirt that says Mexican something...If so, you know my email! :-)
Thanks, Brea!!
Jer- 1. Thanks! I look forward to receiving it.
2. Yes, ORE is a great place to live.
3. Maybe some other time... I am trying to REGAIN faith in humanity.
4. In fact I did... it's 9-1-1. (sorry, bad joke I use on everyone who asks for a phone #)
CRALL! yo, howdy stranger backatcha man. Dude - *I will* buy your ambient cd! I'm just a slacker that takes a while to get his shit together bro. Been busy slammin poetry, goin crazy, so if it doesn't trouble you too much, email me your snailmail addy again to luciferal@gmail.com, and I will try and get that $$ to you asap.

p.s.
nice pics
It would be nice to pick and choose which laws we want to obey.
It all boils down to the old saw - the squeaky wheel gets the grease. The politicians will be ass over heels running to kiss Mexican ass to get the Hispanic vote (you notice the immigration thing is all about Mexicans - odd that).
Wallycrawler, did you know the Mexican mafia is active in Oregon? I found this out through a tow truck company I know. Immigrants buy cars from them, at exorbitant interest rates, then hound them, well, as only any mafia can. Sometimes, when a car is left along the road and the state police call a tow company, and its impounded, either because of abandonment or because the driver was DUI arrested, it will claimed by a group of suit dressed Mexicans, who pay cash to reclaim the car.
So anyhow, I love the fact there are so many subcultures of all types in America. Makes life intersting and less bland and cloned.
I'm thinking the "counter- protester" is right
It's time to ship all the illegeals out
Start with the Canadians, I really hate those foreigners.
Then all the Eurotrash clogging up the streets.
Asians next...non-driving fuckers.
After we warm up cleaning out the interlopers from the North, East and West, then we can handle the invaders from South of the Border.
Fine the hell out of any business that employs illegal’s and use the money to beef up the Border Patrol and build some good solid fences.
Good fences make good neighbors.
Crall,
Great pictures... I even recognize a few of the marchers.
My view is simple, though it may bring much criticism.
I believe America was created from immigrants and therefore has "many" cultures. I believe we can only be better for it if we are accepting and tolerant of other cultures and behaviors.
Simple, but it's what I feel.

I have reallllly strong opinions about this so I will try to down size my thoughts. We had the same rally in NYC and I was surprised at the amount of illegal's that showed up. Realistically we need these immigrants to do the jobs American low life welfare collectors think they are above doing, actually I would like to kick them out and keep the hard working Latin Americans who have more values in their pinky. Any way, if you are here to work and stay out of our system, which my tax dollars pay for, then I have no problem with you. However, if you come here and get free schooling, medical benefits and money, then I say get the #$#@ out; I work excessively hard to pay you to be an amoeba, sponging off of my hard work. It is funny, when my people came to this country they learned the language and would shovle shit against the tide if they had to if it meant they could support their families. France has a law that all business should have signs in French, to me that is a great idea, and there are areas in NY where signs are exclusively Russian, India and more. I consider myself a liberal person but some things, like this, I surprise my self with. One day I will tell you my thoughts about forced contraception for people who do not have the mental or financial ability to raise kids!!!
P.S
the garbage left behind when the rally ended was a mile high. Mexican flags, papers, dirty diapers and the like.
I am the child of immigrants. In fact, since I was born on American soil, I was a US citizen before my parents.
I think if you want to come to America, you should do it legally, as my parents did. I think making it a felony just for giving an illegal first aid or something like that, however, is a bunch of bullshit.
If you want to come to America to send money back to Mexico, that's fine. But I'd like to see a fair legal process is put in place.
Ya I know . I live in a large , Canada's largest , vegetable region . "The Holland Marsh" . The farmers bring in Mexican , Jamaica , Dominican ...labours . These guys are the salt of the earth . Great bunch of guys ! Every year after harvest time the farm labours come into my place of work and I sell them pumps , plumbing supplies , toilets , faucets etc.. They work very hard from April to October and go home with enough cash for their families to live a good lifestyle . Some of these men have been doing this for 20 years or more . Anyone who has a problem with these people coming here don't have a clue and would never do the job these guys do .
The problem I have with illegal workers are not the workers it's the companies like Walmart and Home Depot hiring them at lower wages and with zero health insurance . This practice is becoming rampant . Once an illegal worker takes an American or Canadian job that's when I have a problem and that is happening .
I was being facetious before with the Honda comment but Honda in Ontario hires illegal workers all the fuck'n time and they get away with it !
Good coverage of the event, Dan. It's unfortunate that there are so many people (workers) out there who are so adamantly against other workers just because they are Mexican and supposedly "illegal aliens." It's unfortunate that this is so tied up in hating other people because they are brown or poor or have a different culture. It makes one wonder if the system isn't designed to turn worker against worker, to make the working white man hate the working brown woman, to make the working middle class woman hate the underemployed or nonemployed working poor man? It's interesting that so many people would rather hate good people and want to kick them out of our country—is this our country? who are the immigrants? what is a national boundary? Who owned the Southwest before the US? Mexico. Spain. Native Amerians. This land was taken through murder and greed—rather than hating the system that causes so many good people to hate other good people.
This makes me so sad.
Heard an interesting piece on NPR about illegal aliens and how our language is changing. Illegal has now become a noun instead of an adjective. And most people, when they talk about illegal aliens, are referring to Mexicans and Latin Americans, not including the large numbers of illegal Europeans who are in the country as well. Subconscious racism?
Present situation reminds me of "Walkout"- if you haven't seen it, HBO is still playing it and it's very very good.
America gets a bad press abroad and rallies like this go some way to re-balance the "everyone is right-wing" perspective...right or wrong. It is fairly obvious to a visitor to the US about who drives the big cars and who sweeps the streets.
After seeing some of those hot latinas, I'm all for letting them stay.
Very impressed with your writing. People complain about lost jobs because of illegals, think about it, we have raised our young to be above and strive for the best jobs even if they're not qualified or are just complete idiots. Ask any American, who would do this back breaking work that is available right in their backyards? Not us, we are way to good to shovel, pick produce, or any of the other manual jobs. After all, our parents told us that we are much better than that. Sad thing is, many americans with "education" in their background know very little. Even illegals have more common sense than some "educated".
There are already too many felony offenses on the books. Total amnesty isn't really what I have in mind as the right answer BUT making it a felony offense is ridiculous. I do however still feel that if someone is considered an "American Citizen" that it is reasonable to still expect that they can at least speak some English. Guess you could say that I agree with the whole "When in Rome do as the Romans" saying. But the whole felony thing-can't say I see where that is any kind of "reform". And isn't reform what it was supposed to be about.
A crazy social issue.
On one hand, how can you maintain national security when 11 - 20 million folks are here (and many of them are using assumed names and fake IDs)?
On the other hand, 99.9% of these folks are extremely hard working and law-abiding, (other than living here illegally). Industry, construction, food service, custodial service, etcetera, can't function without this immigrant workforce.
A compromise that is fair, secure, and humane is in order. I truly believe that this is beyond our current Congress' ability to accomplish.
I agree. This congress has little ability of accomplish much good. That's why they need to be replaced by more democrats!! I am not a democrat but I am a libertarian who plans to vote democrat in '06 and '08 in hopes that some sanity is restored to the U.S. Congress. We gotta get rid of those damn republicans!
Catcher in the Rye is a great book. United Idependent code book for victims of racism is another good book. Mr. Neely Fuller is the author.
I live in Indiana half the year and the other half in Oregon...hondas have been my car of choice...
great pictures, but you have been told that often, and of course farmwork is more a job market in oregon than automanufacturing...I used to work in the Delco Remy auto plant many many years ago, my how time flies...
quite amusing and ignorant for the person who spewed out that the Mexican mafia was alive and well in oregon...heh....for those who choose to have their heads buried in the cat shit and no other shit, the mafia and any other kind of Mafia resides in ALL states....
BUTT!!! It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that it depends on WHO you are to even be allowed to PARTICIPATE on THIS BLOG or PERHAPS any OTHER...
deny THAT
